Item Embargo Absenteeism and Academic Performance of Pupils in Selected Primary in Buyanja Sub-County Rukungiri District.(Kabale University, 2023) Twesigye, AbelThe study aimed to examine the effects of absenteeism and academic performance on pupils in selected primary schools in the Buyanja sub-county, Rukungiri district. The study was guided by specific objectives, which included identifying factors contributing to pupil absenteeism, assessing the effects of absenteeism on pupil academic performance, and suggesting potential strategies to reduce absenteeism among pupils in selected primary schools in Buyanja Sub County, Rukungiri District. The study used a mixed research design. In this study, data was collected using questionnaires and key informant interviews. Using simple random and purposive sampling techniques, a total of 100 respondents were selected to participate in the study. A majority (25%) of respondents, the highest number, mentioned that illness was the major cause of pupils' absenteeism in primary schools in the Buyanja sub-county, Rukungiri district. This implies that the majority of the respondents mentioned that absenteeism affects the academic performance of pupils in primary schools in the Buyanja sub-county, Rukungiri district. It was concluded that children more frequently absent in early kindergarten obtained lower working memory and cognitive flexibility scores, as represented by 31 %. The study findings on the possible strategies to reduce absenteeism among pupils in primary schools in the Buyanja subcounty, Rukungiri district indicated that 24% of the respondents mentioned that there should be effective monitoring as a strategy to reduce absenteeism among pupils. The study recommends that policymakers provide incentives or rewards, such as recognition certificates and prizes or gift cards donated by the community, to pupils with good attendance.Item Embargo Achers' Motivation and Students' Academic Performance in C.R.E. The purpose of the study was to analyze the Application of multiple linear regression analysis on academic performance of students in Universities.Item Open Access Assessing the Effect of Counselling On Academic Performance of Primary Learners in Three Selected Primary Schools in Rubaare Sub-County, Ntungamo District.(Kabale University, 2022) Kamutunguza, StephanoThe study was about Counseling on the academic performance of primary learners in three primary schools and it was carried out with specific reference to Rubaare sub-county. The study was guided by the following study objectives; to find out the significance of counseling on the academic performance of learners, to analyze the challenges faced by learners due to the absence of counseling, and to suggest Possible Strategies that can be put in place to reduce the challenges associated with lack of counseling. The study population comprised about 100 people. The study employed cross-sectional surveys that involved different ages, gender statuses, and educational backgrounds among the selected respondents. Respondents from the study included, teachers, parents, and learners were chosen depending on their level of understanding about learners counseling on academic performance. The researcher used purposive sampling as it was the one that was convenient. The research tools that were used to collect data include Questionnaires, interviews group discussions targeting the following recipients, key informants, and focused groups and these were used to obtain both qualitative and quantitative data. 8(10%) of the respondents noted that it is through counseling that learner academics is promoted. This is because as long as learners are counseled they become faithful to each other and this enhances peace in the school. 15( 19%) of the respondents who were interviewed noted that School dropout by children is the main challenge faced by most families. 15(19%) of the total respondents mentioned that the absence of counseling in learners results in strikes and this happens because most of these learners end up fighting and quarreling. Findings on objective three of the study conclude, that 15(19%) of the respondents who were interviewed by the researcher suggested that accepting the Lord Jesus as Lord and Savior by learners should be the way to go. This is because a school that is built on the foundation of Jesus Christ becomes happy as Jesus encourages, and loves peace and reconciliation among learners. The respondents also reported that counseling programs should be organized to increase learner's academic performance.Item Embargo Assessing the Effect of Large Class Size and Pupils Academic Performance in Public Primary School in Rukungiri Municipality.(Kabale University, 2023) Kashumbusha, RobertThe study was about examining the effect of large class sizes and pupils' academic Performance in public primary Schools in Rukungiri Municipality. The study was guided by three objectives which were: to find out the relationship between large class size and pupils' academic performance, to find out the effect of class size on pupils' academic performance in selected schools in Rukungiri Municipality, to identify the pupil's enrollment and number of teachers in public schools. A targeted population of 66 respondents was considered and these included Headteachers, teachers, and pupils. Both simple random and purposive sampling techniques were used in identifying the study sample size. The methods that were used in data collection included questionnaires, observation, and interviews. Data collected was edited, coded, entered into the computer, and analyzed with Excel, a Microsoft statistical package, the results were presented in tables. Based on results from the study, 100% of the respondents were aware of the relationship between large class size and pupils' academic performance, and these- included smaller classes encourage participation or interaction as students may receive more support from classmates, teachers in small classes are more I likely to give individual attention to students, effectively control and manage the classroom and build better relationships with students, class size may also influence teachers' interpersonal styles, small classes are more visible and more likely to engage in learning and social behaviors during class, class size has the potential to affect how students interact with each other. The study findings revealed the effect of class size on pupils' academic performance in selected schools in Rukungiri Municipality. These included quality teaching and assessment suffering in large, lack of funding was perceived to impinge well beyond the classroom to the workplace and ultimately to the state of the economy, lack of appropriate value associated with teaching, school administration creating an environment that affects academic standards either positively or negatively. Objective three, it was found out as indicated by the respondents from public primary schools in Rukungiri municipality that the pupil enrollment and number of teachers in public schools and the introduction of Universal Primary Education in Uganda, the skill that teachers exhibit in teaching influences the pupil enrollment, a teachers lack of experience may translate into low enrollment of students, repetition, and dropout, teachers' experience is important to students' learningItem Embargo Assessing The Effect of Single Parenting on Learners Academic Performance in Selected Secondary Schools of Kabale Municipality.(Kabale University, 2022) Ahumuza, Miriamst assessed the effect of single parenting on learners' academic performance in see secondary schools of Kabale Municipality. The objectives of the study were: to find out the causes of single parenting in Kabale Municipality, to assess the challenges faced by single parents on academic performance, and to examine the effect of single academic performance of students. The study used a descriptive research design e size of 40 respondents was used for the study. The data collection methods used interviews and questionnaires. The study results on the causes of single parenting in e Municipality, the highest number of the respondents mentioned domestic violence. a number of the respondents mentioned unintended pregnancy. Other respondents mentioned death, divorce, and separation, the study results on the challenges fed by students of single parents on academic performance, the highest number of respondents mentioned parental understanding of children's feelings, the lowest number of respondents mentioned the ability to negotiate social situations and produce successful social mention and parents' knowledge of their children other respondents mentioned children's satisfaction with the way they are living their lives, risk of failing to get adequate educational provisions which hinder students' academic performance, and ability to manage their learning and succeed academically and the study results on effects of single parenting on students' academic performance, the highest number of respondents mentioned ess concentration in class, the lowest number of respondents mentioned late coming to school. other respondents mentioned a lack of adequate scholastic materials, isolation from friends which hinders the student's discussion, absenteeism from school, and stressful life which affects students' academic performance. The study recommends that the government should intervene by putting strict laws on domestic violence so that this can be reduced and help to avoid single parenting among the children, more education should be given to all. on dangers of divorce on their children to reduce divorce among partners which muses single parent, parents should not hesitate giving parental guidance to their children.. This study had the following specific objectives: to investigate the perception of teachers, students, parents and religious leaders on the issues of early marriage to girls, to assess the perceptions of the teachers, students, parents and religious leaders on cultural values of smart girls, to find the general perception of community s expectations of girls.A case study design was adopted. A sum of 80 individuals was used in this study from which 16 were individual teachers, 40 individual students, I6 individual parents, 4 religious leaders, and 4 elders were taken as sample size. The study also found negative effects of the names for smart girls where they even tried to hide their talents so that they may be seen as normal. Names are like Kihember,Batare were demeaning and discouraged girls from trying as hard as boys in their academics. The researcher recommended the strategies which should be put into considerations so as to end up the patriarchy system and other bad cultural norms and values about girls and women, which not only demean them but impede them from struggling to be on equal foot with men. a sample sizeItem Open Access Effect of Learning Environment on Academic Performance of Pupils and Students in Kagango Division Sheema Municipality.(Kabale University, 2023) Andonzire, Steve JamesThis study was about assessing the effect of the learning environment on the academic performance of pupils and students in Kagango Division Sheema Municipality. lt was guided by specific objectives which were to describe the factors that cause students' decline in academic performance, to find out the relationship between school environment and academic performance; Pupils and Students in Kagango Division Sheema Municipality and to suggest possible solutions to the effect of learning environment on academic performance of pupils in pre¬primary, primary and secondary schools. The researcher used a descriptive cross-sectional survey where data was collected across the population at one point in time because it ought to describe the issues, the study was conducted in four selected schools in the Division and these were Kihunda primary School and Kihunda parents' secondary school. Rwabutura primary school and Itendero secondary school. The study sampling was cloned on ~l I lead teachers, 30 students, 8 Teachers: and 8 parents from Kagango Division which were both male and female. Both a questionnaire and interview guide were used to collect data and findings indicated that more males participated in the study than females. Respondents who were below 20 years old participated more than the rest of and respondents. The study concluded that more respondents were single than the rest. Also concerning the education background, it was concluded that many respondents were secondary school students and the less number of respondents had attained diplomas and degrees as their qualifications like parents and head teachers. The study concluded that factors that cause students' decline in performance in secondary schools are poverty, domestic violence, Limited evaluation, peer pressure, and Absenteeism. Teasing and bullying and 18% suggested alcoholism. The study also shows the relationship between school environment and students' academic performance to be school environment, giving tests and coursework, strikes and demonstrations, Poor student-teacher relationships, guidance and counseling, poor class control, and Poor methods of teaching. Finally, the study concluded that t-, classes that can be taken to improve performance in secondary schools as Giving rewards to the best-performing students, Government Involvement in Education, Offering support to the suffering students, providing career guidance in schools, Providing Alternative Sources of power and Encouraging Substitutes and finally the study recommended that the government to support students, especially through organizing seminars to equip students with the necessary knowledge from different angles, establish and implement a new curriculum for all schools in way to be more of practical than theory, school management committees of the selected schools to always assess the performance of teachers in teaching through tasking them to produce timetable and lesson plans prioritize investment in education and develops policies to improve the financing of the education in such way as to provide adequate educational facilities for all schools.Item Embargo The Effects of Active Teaching and Learning Methods on The Pupils' Academic Performance in Four Selected Primary Schools in Bugamba Sub-County in Rwampara District.(Kabale University, 2022) Ampurire, MotionThe study examined effects of active teaching and learning methods on the pupils' academic performance in four selected primary schools of Bugamba sub county Rwampara district following the study objective which included to find out factors that influence active teaching and learning methods on the pupils' academic performance in primary schools of Bugamba sub county Rwampara district, to find out whether teachers apply or use active teaching and learning methods in primary schools of Bugamba sub county Rwampara district and to establish a relationship between active teaching learning methods and pupils' academic performance in primary schools of Bugamba sub county Rwampara district. There was critical review of the issues that have explored and studied both theoretically and empirically in the existing literature on active teaching as an independent variable and pupils' academic performance as the dependent variable and the methods of data collection were put into action. The research used both qualitative and quantitaive methods of data collection and analysis. The research used a sample size of 80 respondents using sample random sampling techniques in collecting and analyzing data and was used to provide equal chances to the sample size. Purposive sampling was also used to collect data from respondents that participated in the study. Findings of the study were obtained from the field, interpreting the results and analyzed data based on the specific objectives of the study and male respondents dominated in the study with 63% and majority of them were single having attained primary level of education with 40% of the respondents. Chapter five portrayed the summary of findings, recommendations were made and there was a need to invite more teachers and orient them to use active teaching methods in primary schools and show them that active teaching should be used in all classes of primary schools, the school administration needs to have frequent meeting with the subject teachers and find out the solutions to the problems faced by them with the view of solving them while using active teaching and the school administration also needs to give the subject teachers first priority by getting good trained and committed teachers and also show them the best teaching approaches and their importance of the subject where active teaching method can be used more effectively.Item Open Access Effects of Teaching Methods on Academic Performance of Pupils in Mathematics In Primary Schools of Bufundi Sub-County Rubanda District.(Kabale University, 2023) Byarugaba, JosephThe study assessed the effects of teaching methods on pupils' academic performance in mathematics in primary schools of the Bufundi sub-county, Rubanda district. The study was guided by three objectives namely: To examine the different methods of teaching mathematics effectively in primary schools of Bufundi sub-county, assess the levels of performance in mathematics in primary schools of Bufundi sub-county and establish the relationship between teaching methods and academic performance in mathematics in primary schools of Bufundi sub-county. The study used a cross-sectional descriptive survey design with both quantitative and qualitative approaches to data collection and analysis. The study adopted a case study research design whereby the researcher used only 4 (four) primary schools to collect data from members of a population to determine the status of that population for one or more variables. A sample size of 100 was used. Questionnaires and interviews were used during data collection. Data was analyzed using the statistical package for social scientists (SPSS) version 20.0 later presented in tables. The study findings indicated that 54% of the respondents identify lecture methods as one way of teaching mathematics effectively. They revealed that In a strictly lecture teaching approach, a teacher talks most of the time, uses audio-visual materials to illustrate mathematical concepts, work out mathematical problems and chalkboard, and finally summarizes the main points of a lesson on the chalkboard while pupils listen, take notes and have limited chances of asking questions. This study also revealed, 60% of the respondents revealed that an open-ended question that gets them writing/talking is one way of assessing pupil's academic performance in primary schools. To help students grasp ideas in class, ask open-ended questions that require students to write/talking. They can reveal more than you would've thought to ask directly. This was in line with the practices of Triarisanti & Pumawarman, (2019) who revealed that learning results are often referred to as skills or abilities. The study findings on whether any challenges hindered the implementation of staff training programs geared at improving teachers' job performance included limited funds, teachers' attitude towards training, resistance to change by teachers, and lack of time by teachers due to work schedules and the affect teachers' participation in training and their performance. The study recommended that teaching and learning resources should be provided adequately. Teachers should use the resources properly.Item Embargo Examining Family Influence on the Academic Performance of Pupils in Selected Primary Schools in Hamurwa Sub-County, Rubanda District.(Kabale University, 2021) Kiconco, KateThe study was about examining family influence on the academic performance of pupils in selected primary schools in Hamurwa sub-county Rubanda district. It was guided by specific objectives which included. establishing causes of declining academic performance of pupils in primary schools in Hamurwa Subcounty, finding out how the home influences academic performance in primary schools of Hamurwa subcounty and devising remedial measures to improve pupils' academic performance in primary schools in selected primary schools of Hamurwa subcounty. Cross sectional research design was used where both qualitative and quantitative research designs were employed. The study used a population of 2025 respondents from five government aided primary schools of Isingiro primary school, Kakore primary school, Bukombe primary school, Bugiri primary School and Igomanda primary school, that included parents, pupils, teachers and head teachers. A sample of 125 respondents were delivered using both purposive and simple random sampling. Data was collected from these respondents using interview questionnaire and guides. The response rate was 64% where only 80 questionnaires were retrieved. The study findings found revealed that majority 56% of the respondents were males compared to females. Most other respondents stayed with mothers and both parents. Implying that parental support was very vital in improving pupils learning outcomes. Study findings finally recommended that the Ministry of education and Sports should provide both formal and informal education to parents to make them aware of education needs of their children. The government should also provide favorable environment that will create employment pupils after school. Teachers should also provide pupils with moral support in times of difficulties so that they can be able to cope with their challenges in school. Teachers should also provide pupils from low socio-economic background with words of encouragement. Extended family system should be encouraged so that those children who cannot get enough support from their nuclear family can be supported by the other family members. The parents should provide financial support for their pupils in school for buying learning materials. Parents should also try to provide their Pupils with pocket money and other learning materials in order to motivate them in their academic work.Item Embargo Examining the Influence of Field Study on Academic Performance of Geography Students: A Case Study of Rock High School in Southern Division Kabale Municipality.(Kabale University, 2022) Turyamwijuka, RonaldThe study focused on examining the influence of field study on the academic performance of geography students. The study was guided by three objectives and they included; establishing the use of field work in the teaching and learning of geography, examining the influence of field study on the academic performance of geography students, to identifying the limitations associated with field study in the field of geography. A total sample of eight (80) respondents was considered for the study. The researcher used both simple random and purposive sampling techniques in identifying the study sample population. The methods that were used in data collection included questionnaires and interviews. Dara collected was edited, coded, entered into the computer, and analyzed with Excel, a Microsoft statistical package, the results were presented in tables. Based on the results from the study, respondents agreed field work is used in the teaching and learning of geography Field is an interactive strategy of teaching, field work helps learners to develop their career skills, the learning experiences and interactions between the learner and external conditions, provided them with exact and recognized knowledge of the distribution. From objective two above, it was found out that were are several limitations associated with field study in the field of geography and these included the needs of teacher trainees are not considered, time allotted to geography in most schools is not enough, students cannot relate things they learned with the real, geography teaching programs prepared by the Ministry of Education (ME) is not consisten. The study specifically was meant to find out the causes of low levels of pupils' academic performance and the impact of family economic status on pupils' academic performance. The descriptive cross-sectional survey research design was used for the study where both quantitative and qualitative techniques were used in the data collection process, analysis, presentation, and discussion of findings. Data was collected from six pre-primary schools which were selected using simple random sampling. In those schools, semi-structured questionnaires were administered to head teachers and teachers. It was concluded from the study that limited scholastic materials, pupils' absenteeism, and lack of remedial lessons and preparations were the major causes of low levels of pupils' academic performance. It was also established that family economic background had a significant impact on pupils' academic performance. The study recommended that providing scholastic materials, learning, and instructional materials, attending remedial lessons, feeding pupils on a balanced diet, employing trained teachers, and educating parents during parent's teachers' association meetings on income-generating activities to improve their income levels would effectively improve pupils' level of academic performance.Item Open Access The Impact of Domestic Roles on Girls' Academic Performance in English in Maziba Sub-County Kabale District.(Kabale University, 2021) Mwesigye, FredThe study was conducted to examine the impact of domestic roles on girls' academe performance in English in Maziba sub county Kabale district. A cross sectional survey approach that is both qualitative and quantitative approaches was used. The study was limited to 50 (fifty) respondents. These were teachers, head teachers, parents and pupils. The instruments used were questionnaires and interview. The findings of the study revealed that; education is of great importance to any society because it raises the productivity of both men and women within and outside the home and helps individuals to control their environment and improve their lives. Education helps in creating and widening the choices and opportunities for the people, it reduces the twin burden of poverty and diseases and gives a stronger voice among the marginalized individuals in a society of Maziba sub county Kabale district. Impact of domestic roles like fetching water, collecting firewood. helping with the cooking and caring for the young interferes with schooling and depresses girls· +, performance. girls suffer from overwork in the home, which makes them exhausted and many lose their interest in doing school works, In a family where there is both a female and male pupils, the girls will always be busy from the time they wake up to the time they go to bed while boys will spend most of their time loitering, playing and studying. They found that these practices put girls at a disadvantage because they scores poor performance, the role of girls in society and the organization of the schools system to be the major causes of poor academic performance. Decisionmaking power is a proxy of empowerment along with a few other proxies to investigate the effect of credit programs on women, women have limited role in household decision-making limited access and control over household resources (physical and financial assets), low level of individual assets, heavy domestic workloads, restricted mobility and inadequate knowledge and skills that leading to women's vulnerability, despite their tremendous contribution to food production and well-being for the household, rural women are underestimated in development strategies, women's participation in household decision-making. can automatically increase the overall status of women and as well as make them empowered, women have been considered as a docile daughter, a complacent wife and a dependent mother. The study established the to find out the impact of English language on academic performance of learners in Southern Division Kabale Municipality Kabale District, to determine teachers' preparedness in their use of English language in teaching other subjects and to find out effects of English language enhancement on academic performance among primary schools. The study employed a cross¬sectional survey research design. The study sample included 20 teachers and 35 pupi Is drawn from 5 primary schools selected from Southern Division. Data collection was done using a questionnaire with both closed ended and open-ended questions. The collected data was analyzed in form of descriptive statistics and findings were presented in tables. The researcher therefore concluded that teacher's accent and pronunciation of certain words has led confusion and misinterpretation of questions thus poor performance. Employment of non-qualified staff can also end up causing poor. Learners' performance was also affected by failure to complete the syllabus, inadequate infrastructure such as libraries and computer laboratories as well as poor time management in addition to lows supervision. In order to improve pupils' performances, all stakeholders, that is the Ministry of education, the study recommends that supervisors which include District Education Officer, Uganda National Examinations Board, head teachers, teachers, learners and parents should be involved and work hand in hand and this will improve pupil' academic performance.Item Open Access Internet Usage and Academic Performance of Students At Uganda Martyrs University Kabale Campus.(Kabale University, 2022) Niwashaba, BrendahThe study was about internet usage and academic performance of students at Uganda Martyrs University, Kabale Campus. The study was guided by three research objectives namely; establishing the influence of internet usage on student's academic performance at Uganda Martyrs University, Kabale campus, finding out the challenges encountered by students in the use of internet facilities at Uganda Martyrs University, Kabale campus and suggest possible solutions to the challenges encountered by students in the use of internet facilities at Uganda Martyrs University, Kabale campus. The study population comprised 150 respondents and a sample of 108 respondents was chosen for the study. From the study findings, the majority of respondents accessed the Internet for academic work. It was also indicated that the internet has influenced students' academic performance positively at Uganda Martyrs University, Kabale campus. From the study findings on challenges encountered by students in the use of internet facilities at Uganda Martyrs University, Kabale campus, the majority of respondents indicated power failure. From the study findings, upgrading the system, organizing internet training, installation of generating set, institutional subscription to some sites, employing computer engineers, increasing work station, continuous system maintenance, and installation of a library dedicated server were some of the possible solutions to the challenges encountered by students in the use of internet facilities at Uganda Martyrs University, Kabale campus. A case study of Kashambya sub-county. It was guided by three specific objectives that included; Investigating the contributions of remedial teaching towards pupils' academic performance, Finding om the forms of remedial teaching applied in Kashambya Sub County, and Determining the relationship between remedial teaching and academic performance of pupils in Kashambya sub county. The study adopted a cross-sectional research design that was approached with a mixed approach of qualitative and quantitative approaches. Using questionnaires and interview guide instruments, data was collected from 50 respondents that included 5 head teachers, 17 teachers, and 28 pupils from selected five primary schools in Kashambya Sub County. The collected data was scrutinized and analyzed using an Excel computer package and presented in the form of tables indicating frequencies and percentages in Microsoft Word. The first study objective revealed that schools in Kashambya Sub County were conducting remedial education with 52% of respondents indicating that it develops better learning results as a contribution toward pupils' academic performance The second study objective revealed that private tutoring was the major form of remedial education practiced as represented by a 60% response The third study objective revealed that there was a relationship between the variables. The notion was supported by 44% of the study participants identifying that Students in schools that conduct remedial education are more likely to succeed than those that do not offer remedial education. The study ended by recommending to different stakeholders like the government, teachers, district inspectors pupils among others for example the government of the Republic of Uganda through its bodies such as the Ministry of Education and Sports and Ministry of Finance is recommended to put more emphasis on supporting and facilitating remedial education in primary schools so that they can be remunerated while conducting this process. The government is further recommended to legalize the program and possibly consider it on the curriculum for better performance in primary schools.Item Embargo School Feeding Programme and Academic Performance of Primary School Pupils in Southern Division Rukungiri Municipality.(Kabale University, 2023) Nimusiima, LydiaThe purpose of the study is to examine the effect of the school feeding program on the academic performance of primary school pupils in the southern division of Rukungiri municipality. The study was guided by specific objectives, namely: identifying the impact of school feeding programs on the academic performance of pupils; studying the relationship between school feeding and pupil performance in primary schools; and comparing the academic performance of schools with school feeding programs and those without. The study utilized a cross-sectional research design utilizing both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis approaches. Using simple random and purposive sampling techniques, a total of 58 respondents were selected to participate in the study. Data was collected using questionnaires and key informant interviews. The majority of participants (94% agreed on the impact of the school feeding program on the academic performance of pupils, and the study found a significant positive relationship between the school feeding program and the academic performance of primary pupils in the southern division of Rukungiri municipality (p =0.01, r =.530**). This indicates that school feeding programs have a significant association with academic performance, and the majority of the respondents agreed that the education rate of pupils in a given school increased, unlike in schools where it did not. It was recommended that the school feeding policy be put in place and implemented to enforce the law and save starving
