Abstract

The study was about the impact of tourism on the preservation of cultural heritage in Rubanda District has been a subject of concern. The study was guided by objectives like to identify the different activities of tourism in the community of Rubanda district, to find out the preservation of cultural heritage among communities in Rubanda district, and to find out the relationship between tourism activities and preservation of cultural heritage in Rubanda district. The study will use a descriptive research design because it aims to obtain information to systematically describe a phenomenon, situation, or population. The study used 168 respondents from 300 as a target population. The study used data collection methods like questionnaire and interview guide due to the nature of respondents under the study. The found out that Rubanda District is near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which is famous for gorilla trekking. Tourists treks through the dense forest to observe mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, some respondents also showed the district's forests and wetlands are home to a diverse array of bird species, making it an excellent destination for bird watching enthusiasts. From the findings, some respondents mentioned that traditional music and dance are integral to cultural heritage in Rubanda. Incorporating cultural studies into school curricula to teach younger generations about their heritage, some respondents also showed that storytelling remains a vital method of preserving history and culture, some respondents agreed that the crafting of items like baskets, mats, and pottery is common in Rubanda. Some respondents also showed that tourism brings economic benefits to local communities, providing an incentive to preserve cultural heritage, some respondents also showed that tourism creates employment opportunities for local residents, particularly in guiding. The study concludes that tourism and cultural heritage preservation in Rubanda District are deeply interconnected, creating a sustainable model that benefits the community economically while ensuring that the rich cultural traditions and natural beauty of the region are preserved for future generations. Through continuing to support and develop both sectors, Rubanda District can maintain its unique identity and attract more visitors, fostering a vibrant and resilient community. The study recommends that there is need to involve local communities in the planning and management of tourism activities to ensure their interests and cultural values are respected and promoted. The government and NGOs needs to provide training and support to local communities on managing tourism and preserving cultural heritage. This can include skills in guiding, hospitality, and cultural documentation.
