Impact of Flooding of River Nyamwamba on Community Development: A Case Study of Nyamwamba Sub-County Kasese District.

Abstract

This study research focused on the findings of the impact of flooding of river Nyamwamba on the economic development of the Nyamwamba sub-county Kasese district. The objectives of the study were to identify the main causes of flooding in Nyamwamba Sub County, to assess the impact of flooding on infrastructure development and community reliance, and to identify effective disaster management strategies to mitigate the impact of flooding in the region. The study used a descriptive research design that aimed at generating information after the incident of flood occurrence. Data was collected using questionnaires and interviews, simple random and purposive sampling methods were used. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used to analyze data as a sample size of 150 respondents was used. The study findings showed the causes of flooding of river Nyamwamba in Nyamwamba Sub County show that 28% is caused by heavy rainfall, 15% of the respondents mentioned extensive runoff, 08% river channel changes mentioned by the respondents, 11% urbanization, 14% deforestation and land use activities as mentioned by the respondents, 17% climate change and 06% of the respondents mentioned ice jams. The study revealed the impact of flooding on the economic development of Nyamwamba Sub County in Kasese district, 30% of the respondents mentioned property, infrastructure damage, and loss of lives, 18% agriculture practices, 12% mentioned increased public and private expenses, 07% of the respondents mentioned business destruction, 20% long term economic impact, 08% public health and productivity, 05% strain on public resources. Lastly, the study revealed effective disaster management, 23% of the respondents mentioned adaptation to climate change, 20% said early warning and community education, 17% of the respondents mentioned integrated and water resource management, 13% mentioned community involvement and stakeholder management, 10% mentioned flood modeling and simulation and geographical information system, 10% of the respondents mentioned zoning and land use planning and 07% of the respondents who participated in the study mentioned construction of flood barriers and levees. .
