Abstract

The study was on the effect of social environment on the effectiveness of HIV/ AIDS prevention a case study of Rwamucucu sub-county Rukiga district. The objectives of the study were; to assess the social and environmental determinants of HIV infection, to examine the challenges to effective HIV/AIDS prevention, and to identify the existing strategies that are being used in preventing HIV/AIDS. The study used a cross-sectional design where both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used. The study targeted 45 respondents and a sample size of 40 respondents was used for the study. The study results on social and environmental determinants of HIV infection, the highest number of the respondents mentioned violence in families while the least number of the respondents mentioned violence in families. Other respondents mentioned violence in families, accessibility of health care services, and alcohol consumption, and the study findings on challenges to effective HIV/AIDS prevention, the highest number of respondents mentioned lack of coverage and access to prevention services. the lowest number of respondents mentioned a lack of accurate evaluations, other respondents mentioned stigma among rural communities, cost of treatment, and lack of awareness and the study results on HIV/AIDS prevention measures, the highest number of respondents mentioned social marketing of condoms, the lowest number of respondents mentioned encouraging being faithful to their partners. other respondents mentioned having school-based HIV prevention programs, discouraging wife inheritance, and voluntary counseling and testing of the people. The study recommended that there should be an increase in HIV/ AIDS awareness by the government to the people through different media technologies so that people can understand and avoid the spread of HIV/AIDS, there should be programs that should ensure that people understand what lllV/AIDS_ is, how it is transmitted and how it affects daily living. This knowledge can be disseminated by a variety of methods including hosting educational sessions. training workshops. community meetings, focus groups, and wellness programs by peer educators and community leaders and some of the programs should target the youth. as education at a young age may result in positive outcomes in the future.
