Item Open Access Evaluating the Potential of Cultural Tourism for Community Development in Kisoro District, South Western Uganda.(Kabale University, 2016) Matsiko, AdamIn Kisoro district, there are large communities which are impoverished, disadvantaged and living in undeveloped settlements. However, very few people benefit with the availability of cultural tourism in the area. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential of cultural tourism for community development in Kisoro District, south western Uganda. The specific objectives of the study were; (i) to evaluate potential cultural tourism resources, (ii) assess perceptions of local people towards cultural tourism development and (iii) to assess the contribution of cultural tourism towards the economic development of Kisoro district. Cross section design utilizing mixed methodologies was used. Both Purposive and simple random sampling techniques were used to select and obtain the respondents. Data collection methods were; questionnaires, key Informant Interviews, Observation Method. Microsoft excel was used in analysis of data collected from 85 respondents. The study found out that potential cultural tourism resources were; cultural values and life styles, architecture museums and theatres, indigenous cultural communities, art crafts and niches. Contributions of cultural are; community pride (20%), provided markets for cultural products (15% ), economic growth (09% ), demand for cultural goods (16%) and employment opportunities to local people (06). The people's perceptions on cultural tourism were; exploitation by tourists-hosts (15% ), support from the local people (22% ), aggression form of cultural people (20%), cultural differences (18%), resistance from the local communities (12%) and conflicts for local connection towards tourists (13%). The study examined the strategic importance of packaging, assessed different designs used in packaging, and established the relationship between packaging and organizational sales turnover in Kigezi Industries Uganda limited in the Kitumba sub-county Kabale district. A cross-sectional survey design used a population of forty respondents for the study. Self administered questionnaires and interview guides were used in data collection and data was analyzed using excel, a computer software to generate descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages and were presented in tables and text, the findings of the study packaging and organizational sales turnover a case study of Kigezi industries Uganda limited in Kitumba sub-county Kabale district, on strategic importance of packaging to Kigezi industries Uganda limited in Kitumba sub-county Kabale district, the following were mentioned; packaging preserves, packaging promotes customer choices and packaging informs and instructs, on different designs used in packaging by Kigezi industries Uganda limited in Kitumba sub¬county Kabale district structural and graphical designs were used, on relationship between of packaging and organizational sales turnover the findings revealed that increase profits of the organization, packaging stimulates customers to buy products, facilitates quick and easy products delivery and packaging makes easy handling of the products. On recommendations, employment of skilled staff should be done in order to make proper packaging that can lead to safe delivery of products and also attracts customers to buy, variety of packaging designs should be used in order to attract different categories of people's attention in order to maximize on the sales turnover, the government should intervene by providing subsidy to Kigezi industries in order to provide salaries to their worker which leads to production of more products that satisfies peoples' needs and distribution of the packed goods should be done to different areas in order to satisfy the desires of the people since packaging leads to safe delivery of the products to customers and areas for further research, the study investigated packaging and organizational sales turnover a case study of Kigezi industries Uganda limited in Kitumba sub-county Kabale district therefore further research should be carried out on the role packaging and service delivery of the organization and further research should also be carried out on the relationship between packaging and profitability of the organization.Item Open Access Outsourcing Decisions on Procurement Performances of Government Entities: A Case Study of Kabale University.(Kabale University, 2021) Twinomugisha, ShallonThe study investigated the outsourcing strategy and procurement performance in Public Universities in Uganda using Kabale University as a case study. The study assessed the contributions, problems, and effects of government policy on outsourcing strategy and procurement performance in public Universities in Uganda, the study used a descriptive survey design which was both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The study used a population of 48 respondents, and a sample size of 40 respondents was determined using both purposive and simple random sampling techniques, the contributions of outsourcing strategy and procurement performance showed that the strategy maximized performance as stated by 15% of respondents and it also creates room for timely auditing as stated by the biggest percentage of respondents 20% among other respondents. Therefore, the outsourcing strategy has contributed much towards the procurement performance of Kabale University, respondents had this to say, little or no support from client leaders receiving services, loss of key talent by the university, and lastly poor mutual understanding between the university and stakeholders involved in the outsourcing business, the study found out that government policy has an effect on outsourcing strategy on procurement performance at Kabale university, 27% of the respondents explained that good government policy such as well enacted PPDA laws improves procurement performance at the university. The study concluded that the establishment of a favorable government policy that favors public institutions' outsourcing strategy could improve procurement performance in public institutions in Uganda. The study recommends that the outsourcing strategy at Kabale University procurement unit should be given much attention in the university budget because it means a lot to the university. The study recommends re-organizing the procurement committee at Kabale University to curb all the rising problems in creating an outsourcing committee that benefits the university. The study recommends that government policy should always consider procurement units at Kabale University and all other public universities in Uganda. The study suggests that more research should be carried out on outsourcing in public institutions and all other levels of education such as middle-level colleges and government parastatals and the results of the same are compared to allow for generalizations of the findings.Item Open Access Assessing Sales Forecasts and Business Growth of Small and Medium Enterprises in Kabale Municipality Kabale District: A Case Study of Mega Bakery.(Kabale University, 2021) Akiiza, ChrispusThe importance of the sales forecast permeates many business management activities including cash flow estimation, cash budgeting, capital budgeting, capital structure analysis, financial planning, and valuation which leads to business growth. Despite the significance of sales forecasting on business growth, Mega Bakery has not embraced the use of sales forecasting and this has caused failure of the business to satisfy the customers' needs and this has also affected the business growth. Therefore it is against this background that the researcher wished to assess sales forecasting and business growth of small and medium enterprises in Kabale Municipality Ka bale district a case study of Mega bakery.Item Open Access The Role of Internal Auditing Practices on the Performance of Local Government: A Case of Central Division Kisoro Municipality.(Kabale University, 2021) Ngabire, NobertThe purpose of the study was to establish the role of auditing practices in the performance of local government with specific reference to Central Division Kisoro Municipality. The study was guided by the following specific objectives; to find out the nature of the internal audit in Central Division Kisoro Municipality, to identify the challenges faced by the internal audit in enhancing financial performance in Central Division Kisoro Municipality, and to identify solutions to he challenges faced by internal audit in Central Division Kisoro Municipality. The study population comprised about 100 people. The researcher used 50 respondents who Were selected from Central Division, Kisoro Municipality. In this study, 60 respondents were chosen qualitatively and quantitatively where all the respondents were interviewed, and others were given questionnaires. This Research study employed descriptive research where both Primary and Secondary data were collected. The study also used cross-sectional surveys that involved different ages, gender status, and educational background among the selected respondents. The researcher used purposive sampling as it was the one that was convenient. However, the researcher also used systematic sampling as it helped her come up with firsthand information from respondents. The research tools that were used to collect data include Questionnaires, interviews group discussions targeting the following recipients, key informants, and focused groups, and these were used to obtain both qualitative and quantitative data. The study established that Central Division Kisoro Municipality, audit department is responsible for making comparisons between different period's figures with the current period figures and finding out the changes which at the time must be explained and justified. Findings from the study further revealed that internal audit in the local government of Central Division Kisoro Municipality make comparisons of physical items and if possible sometimes count them in the trial balance of the current year with items of that trial balance of the previous year and see whether an item has been left out which at times are traced to the ledger to find exactly that which has been left out. The study also concluded that political interference, corruption, conflict of interest, inadequate skills, inadequate information, inadequate funds, and improper communication flow are the major challenges faced by internal audit and financial performance of Central Division Kisoro Municipality. The study recommended that the employment of a strong internal control system in local governments will eventually reduce the frauds and errors done by the employees.Item Open Access Impacts of Trade Unions on Employees' Welfare in UNATU, Kabale District.(Kabale University, 2021) Cyomperwe, JustinahThe main objective of this study was to assess the impact of trade unions on employees' welfare taking the Kabale District UNA TU branch as a case study. The specific objectives were to establish the roles of trade unions on employees, to determine the challenges that face trade unions on employees' welfare and to examine the strategies that can be used to ensure effective implementation of trade unions and employees' welfare. The study specifically sought to establish the extent to which governance and leadership structures affect the performance of trade unions. A correlation research design was adopted for this study incorporating quantitative methods of data collection and the population of the study was 90 respondents consisting of members and staff of Uganda National Teachers' Union, Kabale District UNA TU branch. Data were analyzed using SPSS data analysis package version 19 which ran descriptive statistics and inferential statistics such as Pearson chi-squares to test hypotheses. The study findings revealed a positive correlation (0.789) between governance structure and Kabale District UNA TU branch's performance; a positive correlation (0.674) between leadership structure and performance. The study concluded that governance and leadership structures when handled effectively can yield immense positive results hence leading to improved performance of trade unions. A labour union is an organization by or for the workers to pursue collective workplace goals, wages, benefits and powers. They are intended to represent the collective interests of workers in negotiation with employers over wages, hours of work and working conditions. This study analyzed the adequacy of the legal mandate of labour unions in Uganda and found it adequate but only lacks political will in its implementation and enforcement due to the circumstances under which it was passed. The research also examined the rights and privileges of labour unions. The most hindrance to the enjoyment of these rights and privileges has always been the government's negative attitude towards them as this study explains in the context. The major problems facing labour unions in Uganda are; casualization of labour which leaves workers at the employers' mercy since their terms and conditions of work are not expressly prescribed, unemployment, and insufficient and inadequate facilitated labour officers Due to the decentralization of labour matters, there is need for the establishment of sufficient, well-funded and staffed branches of industrial courts in Uganda, urgency for the grant of the minimum wage that is appropriate to the services rendered to eliminate oppression at workplace and ensure the enforcement of all privileges and rights granted to the workers.Item Open Access Employee Teamwork and Performance of Organizations in Rukungiri District: A Case Study of Rubabo People’s SACCO.(Kabale University, 2022) Arinanye, BleshOrganizations globally are embracing working in geographically segmented markets to enable a diverse of more established workforce. This is done through the formation of very strong teams with both local and global expertise. Clendenin, (2014), argued that by bringing people from different diverse areas with different cultures will help organizations to improve their performance. To motivate the employees, the management can apply certain strategies such as proper employee compensation, all employee participation, and regular feedback on the expected performance of the whole SACCO however this has not been the case with Rubabo Peoples SACCO. Effective employee compensation has been proved to be one of the key drivers of motivation since individuals are naturally persuaded to perform since they are well remunerated by the SACCO for their full efforts in delivering the allocated objectives. The purpose of the study was limited to employee teamwork and the performance of organizations in Rukungiri district a case study of Rubabo Peoples SACCO.Item Open Access The Impact of E-Banking on Performance of Financial Institutions in Uganda: A Case Study of DFCU Bank, Kabale Branch.(Kabale University, 2022) Amutuheire, GrantThe purpose of the study was to find out the impact of e-banking on the performance of financial institutions in Uganda: A Case of DFCU Bank, Kabale Branch. The study was guided by specific objectives, namely, to find out the forms of E-banking used in DFCU Bank, determine the relationship between E-banking and the performance of DFCU Bank, and examine the impact of E-banking on the performance of DFCU Bank in Kabale District. This study employed a descriptive research and survey design, as well as quantitative and qualitative approaches, Using simple random and purposive sampling techniques, a total of 67 respondents were selected for this study. In addition, questionnaires and interviewing methods of data collection were used. The research findings showed that the forms of e-banking used in the DFCU bank in Kabale district were mobile banking, as represented by 33%, internet banking, as represented by 30%, electronic cards, as represented by 22%, and electronic fund transfers, as represented by 15%. The study discovered a strong significant relationship (r =.761; sig .. 05) between electronic banking and financial institution performance, particularly DFCU Bank in the Kabale district. According to the study findings, 33% of the majority of respondents indicated that electronic banking had a positive impact on the performance of financial institutions in the Kabale district, particularly DFCU Bank. According to the study, financial institutions that have not yet implemented some e-banking tools should do so in order to improve their performance and serve their customers as expected.Item Open Access Assessing the Impact of Small-Scale Firms on Household Welfare in Uganda: A Case Study of Muhanga Town Council in Rukiga District.(Kabale University, 2022) Kukundakwe, DaniseThe industrial sector in Uganda is characterized by small-scale and large-scale manufacturing and processing small-scale firms where fewer often are foreign-owned. However, in Uganda, despite small-scale firms being a key vehicle for economic success, having the potential to provide employment opportunities to the millions of unemployed people and having the capacity to contribute to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as well as poverty reduction to improve on household welfare, still the house bold welfare people have not been realized. It has been revealed that three out of five small-scale firms in Uganda fail within the first two years of operation and those that continue 80 percent fail before the fifth year. Small-scale firms including those of MMuhanga town council in Rkiga district have issues like inadequate skills among the business operators, inadequate capital, and high taxes, which affect their success and profitability and hinder their ability to contribute effectively to the sustainable growth and development of the businesses and improvement of household welfare. This situation prompted the researcher to carry out a study on the impact of small-scale firms on household welfare in Uganda a case study of Muhanga Town Council in Rukiga district. The study was guided by the benefits of employee teamwork of organization in Kabale district, the relationship between employee teamwork and serf.mance of organization in Kabale district, the factors affecting employee performance of orgarization in Kabale district. The study used descriptive research design that aimed at generating information after the incident had occurred; Qualitative approach included the use of interviews. Data was collected using a questionnaire and interview guide, simple random and purposive sampling method were used. Both qualitative and quantitative methodologies were used to analyze data as a sample size of 44 respondents was used. The study revealed that the benefits of employee teamwork of organization in Kabale district include; team exists to achieve a shared goal, boundedness means the team has an identifiable membership, members of group usua'!y do not take responsibility for any result other than their own, productivity, satisfaction and 1dividual well being is achieved. The study revealed the some of the the relationship between employee teamwork and performance in an organization working as a team increases the efficiency of departments exponentially, working as part of employee teamwork can improve learning and is a much needed skill in today's workplace, teamwork is a joint action by a group of people, teamwork has become an important part of the working culture. Lastly, that the study revealed that the factors affecting employee performance as motivation, repertoire, technology, feed back, goal clarity and knowledge of structure. The study findings concluded showing the benefits of employee teamwork of organization in Kabale district include; team exists to achieve a shred goal, boundedness means the team has an identifiable membership, members of group usually do not take responsibility for any result other than their own, productivity, satisfaction and individual well being is achieved, organizations can be successful if they use all of their human resource capacity, compensation can be removed as an obstacle to effective teamwork.Item Open Access Record Keeping and Financial Performance of Small-Scale Enterprises in Uganda: A Case Study of Kabale Municipality.(Kabale University, 2022) Tumwebaze, EditorThe study assessed the record-keeping and financial performance of small-scale enterprises in Uganda. The objectives of the study were; to evaluate record-keeping practices in small-scale enterprises in Kabale Municipality, to establish the financial performance indicators among small-scale enterprises in Kabale Municipality, and to establish the relationship between record-keeping and financial performance of small-scale enterprises in Kabale Municipality. The study used a descriptive research design and data was collected using interviews, documentary evidence, and questionnaires. The study findings on record-keeping practices in small-scale enterprises in Kabala Municipality were; records creation, control storage and access, retention and disposal procedures, and destruction and/or deletion. The study findings on financial performance indicators among small-scale enterprises were; business growth, operating cash flow, employment levels of workers, and stock turnover. The study findings on the relationship between record keeping and financial performance of small-scale enterprises were; that record keeping helps to manage their businesses, record keeping helps to improve the success of their businesses, record keeping are resources that could otherwise be used for investment, facilitating future growth of the business, record keeping is help in the attainment of proper performance in business as all business activities are shown in the records kept and record keeping helps to determine the survival of business. The study recommended that the owners of small-scale enterprises should ensure that they use better records management practices which can help them to easily retrieve the documents when needed for reference easily, there is a need for business owners to have enough storage space for expansion to facilitate proper records management so that they can be able to achieve their intended objectives and there should be proper financial recordings in records of the business enterprise to use them as source of reference for better accountability of the business progress.Item Open Access The Impact of Taxation on Business Investment in Kabale Municipality, Kabale Uganda.(Kabale University, 2022) Mbuzahoose, BakerThe study was carried out to investigate the impact of taxation on business investment in Kabale Municipality, Kabale district. The study employed descriptive design where both qualitative and quantitative methods were used. The study targeted 1300 respondents who included vendors and customers but 305 respondents were sampled using simple random sampling. The sample was calculated using Yaman's (1967) Formula. The research findings found that the types of revenues collected in the Kabale central market included fees, special assessments on property owners, licenses, and fines. The performance of small-scale enterprises in the Kabale central market was found to be very good. The study also found that local governments have a strong impact on local revenue in that they regulate business activities, reduce law breakers, and get funding from government programs. The study concluded that taxes are a key player in every country's development both economically, socially, and even politically. So all the stake holders and citizens of the country should sensitized about tax paying and its use, Types of local revenue collected in Kabale central market include fees such as parking fees, late payment of bills; Licenses, Special assessment on the property owners; and businesses perform better since majority of respondents rated business performance as excellent. Therefore, it was recommended that local revenue collection affect the performance of businesses in the Kabale central market in that they regulate businesses, reduce lawbreakers, and Get funding for government programmesItem Open Access Procurement Planning and Performance of Public Entities in Uganda: A Case Study of Kisoro District Local Government.(Kabale University, 2022) Harerimana, RonaldThe purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between procurement planning and the performance of public entities of the Kisoro district local government. lt was guided by objectives namely; the relationship between procurement needs assessment and performance, procurement budgeting, and performance. The study adopted a cross-sectional study design and a selected size of 131 was used. Primary data was collected from procurement officers and staff from the accounts/ finance department using both questionnaires and an interview guide. Secondary data was mainly obtained from annual reports, manuals, the PPDA Act, 2003, policy guidelines, and journals among others. Based on the data analysis results, it was found that there is a relationship between procurement planning and the performance of public entities. It was also found that PDU prepares a consolidated procurement work plan subject to the approved annual budget, it also implied that generally, the respondents agreed that the consolidated procurement plan is strictly followed. The study also found that procurement budgeting and planning are influenced by the market environment. The procurement activities planning is dependent on annual budgets. it was concluded that adhering to the procurement planning procedures and methods as prescribed by the PPDA Act, 2003: empowering the PDU procurement officers and training them on public procurement laws. policies regulations and policy guidelines especially the PPDA Act, 2003 will enable them to independently handle and manage procurement needs assessment and budgeting and mn compliance with procurement planning procedures and methods and improve the overall performance of the KDLG PDU. The study recommends that PDUs in Uganda should train and sensitize procurement and tendering/contract committee members, suppliers, bidders/ contractors on appropriate procurement procedures and practices as required by the PPDA Act, 2003 to enhance compliance with the Act, reduce costs, and enhance timely delivery. The study was guided by the following objectives; to establish the effect of savings in the form of cash on the performance of small-scale enterprises, to establish the effect of savings in the form of inventory on the performance of small I scale enterprises, and to establish the effect of debtors' management on the performance of small scale enterprise. The study used a cross-sectional survey design using Mbarara Central Market as a case study. The study used a sample size of 92 respondents according to Krejcie, R.V, & Morgan, D.W. 2009 table of sample size. The researcher therefore amalgamated the use of questionnaires, interviews, and documentary analysis in the process of collecting primary data. Quantitative data involved the use of frequencies, and tables against their percentages i.e.; pie charts, and these showed values that aided in data interpretation. Qualitative data was presented in writing useful information from the respondents as presented concerning the study The researcher found out that income from an investment that does not qualify as a franked investment is saved to be invested in the future thus increasing the saving culture; income derived from paid employment and comprising mainly wages and salaries comprised a large percentage of the respondents' savings. The study concludes that when a financial institution has financial reporting obligations may increase the saving culture among the people. The motive of savings among most small businesses is quite wrong and it may not contribute to growing their businesses. The study recommends that there should be a re-orientation for these business owners which must be done even before any government intervention else those proceeds from the intervention may still be wrongly used. The study aimed to establish the factors constraining the operations of microfinance institutions and their possible remedies, find out the challenges faced by households in accessing microfinance institutions' services, and investigate the benefits of microfinance institutions towards household incomes. This study used a cross-sectional research design where both qualitative and qualitative methods of data collection and analysis were applied. Data was collected from both primary and secondary sources using questionnaires and interview guides. Data was processed and analyzed using formal tables, pie charts, and narrative text. A total of 50 respondents were considered out of the entire study population. The study findings revealed that access to microfinance was significantly associated with improvement in consumption, income, and poverty status among households. Thus households saving and getting loans from Micro Finance Institutions have increased their income. The study recommends that the government should take steps to improve favorable environments for petty businesses (e.g., better infrastructure, and training of business knowledge) to enhance the effectiveness of microfinance on income-generating activities.Item Open Access Marketing Strategies and Organization Performance: A Case Study of Rukiga SACCO Kabale Municipality Kabale District.(Kabale University, 2022) Ainebyoona, JacobThis study examined Marketing strategies and organization performance in the case of Rukiga Sacco Kabale Municipality Kabale District. The study was guided by the following specific objectives: to identify the marketing strategies employed by Rukiga SACCO, to examine the marketing challenges of SACCOs, and to assess the relationship between marketing strategies and business performance. A descriptive qualitative research design was used to survey both quantitative and qualitative data. The target population constituted 5 members of staff and 40 clients of Rukiga SACCO. The researcher applied purposive sampling to select 2 staff members of the SACCO. The researcher also used simple random sampling to select 38 clients of the SACCO. Editing of the questionnaires was cloned to ensure there were no errors. Analysis of quantitative data was cloned using statistical analysis techniques such as the frequencies, means, and percentages Analysis of qualitative data was done using content analysis. The presentation of the data was done using tables. The study findings revealed that making visitations to the community to sensitize the general public is the main marketing strategy, competition is the main challenge faced by SACCO and marketing improves diversity and SACCO's relevance. The study recommends that community members be organized in cooperative unions or associations to easily acquire certain services or help from the SACCOs such as getting loans at lower interest.Item Open Access Budgeting and Performance of Financial Institutions: A Case Study of Lyamujungu Sacco in Kabale Municipality.(Kabale University, 2022) Arinaitwe, YosamThe study aimed at the relationship budgeting and performance of financial institutions. A case study of Lyamujungu Sacco in Kabale Municipality. Objectives guided the study, namely: to assess the effect of budgeting on resource allocation in micro finance institutions, to examine the effect of budgeting on profitability of micro finance institutions, and to assess the effect of budgeting on planning and control in micro finance institutions in Uganda. The researcher adopted a descriptive status research design to collect qualitative and quantitative data from 30 respondents. Data collection was done using questionnaires, and a documentary checklist and analysis were done. Results indicate that budgeting estimates, as realistically as possible, the cost of completing the objectives of the organization. Some respondents showed that budgeting helps in the expression of organizations policies especially on how to acquire assets for the success of organizations, budgeting provides a means to monitor the project's financial activities over the life of the organization in that the budgeting process the SACCO has failed to monitor the performance of their clients hence affecting the performance of the financial institution. Budget in terms of revenues gives a bottom line for revenues to be met. Some respondents showed that budgeting enables projects to acquire extra money, and respondents gave their opinions that all budgetary control is a proven management tool. Some respondents showed that budgeting in business organizations is formally associated with the advent of industrial capitalism. The study concludes that there is a role played by budgeting in the performance of Lyamujungu Sacco where by the findings showed that Lyamujungu Sacco practiced budgeting on whatever transaction they were making, it was therefore concluded that improved communication, budgeting, financial control of inputs, planning and coordination were the roles played by budgeting, increased profits, reduces wastage of resources, were the other roles played by budgeting in MFis. The study recommends that the employees should be encouraged to participate in the formulation of the budget so as to ensure participatory management that reduces resistance from employees. All the employees should be sensitized on the importance of budget in the organization so as to reduce the conflict between the organizations interest and stake holders.
