Item Open Access Vocational and Technical Training and Promotion of Employment in Kabale District: A Case Study of Kabale Municipalty.(Kabale University, 2013) Mercy, OrikirizaThere is an outcry among the public on the quality and quantity of graduates from tertiary institutions, that the graduates are unemployable. It is not known whether the problem is due to insufficient relevant training centers and skills requirements of the world of work, which do not match properly. It is for this reason that this study sought to find out the influence of vocational and Technical training on employment levels in Kabale district. The study was guided by the following objectives; to find out the role played by vocational training in economic development, to find out the perceptions of Educators and employers regarding the employability of graduates of vocational programs. The study collected data from 60 respondents purposively selected from five institutions in the Municipality. Furthermore. Literature by other researchers and scholars was revisited. In most of the findings of these researchers, they identified vocational training as a factor that promotes employment. Most of the respondents in the above were of the view that vocational training had influenced promotion of employment in Uganda, supported the idea that vocational education and training contribute to economic development and that polytechnic and vocational institutions have prepared sufficient numbers of skilled and semi-skilled workers to satisfy the needs of labor force. The study ended by recommending that; In order for vocational training institutions to meet training and educational challenges, innovative pedagogic and instruction methods and delivery systems must be integrated within the frame work of such need for skilled development initiative towards promotion of employment and that firm linkages and coordination are required amongst the various public and private schools, training centers including company based training and on job training that provide relevant practical oriented training that promotes employment.Item Embargo An Evaluation of the Causes and Effects of Soil Erosion in Kabale District. A case Study of Ikumba Sub-County.(Kabale University, 2014) Immaculate, KebirungiSoil erosion refers to the removal of top layer of soil and subsequently transported and deposited in other low laying area. Transportation and deposition of soil in Uganda is because of three major agents that is water, wind and glaciers (on snow caped mountain of Rwenzori) although there other minor agents like high population. The study was to identify the causes and effects of soil erosion in Ikumba sub-county kabale district. The study was guided by three objectives; to identify the causes of soil erosion in Ikumba sub-county kabale district and to identify the possible the possible mechanisms of reducing the incurring soil erosion in Ikumba sub-county Kabale District. The study was carried out in three parishes of Nyaruhanga, Nyamabale and Nyakabungo parish from Ikumba sub-county Kabale Districts. The study targeted 93 people who were chosen by random sampling method. The research methods used included questionnaires, observation method and interview method. The study findings were tabulated and presented in frequency distribution tables and frequencies and later presented in figures that are pie charts and graphs. From the study, 32.3% of respondents reported that over cultivation is the major cause of soil erosion, this is followed by 21.5% of the respondents who attributed soil erosion to be caused by the nature of the soil, Bush burning was reported by 5.4% of the respondents also leads to soil erosion,10.7% of the respondents reported road construction as one of the factors leading to soil erosion, Deforestation was also reported to be among the causes of soil erosion at 10.7% and over grazing also at 10.7%. Among the effects of soil erosion in Ikumba sub county, 26.8% of the respondents revealed that soil erosion leads to loss of soil fertility, 32.3% of the respondents said that soil erosion leads to famine, 16.1% of respondents revealed that soil erosion results into destruction of human settlement and swamps as reported by 10.7% of the respondents and 6.4% of the respondents reported disease outbreak from eroded waste material.Item Embargo Assessing The Causes of Poor Performance in Geography At Advanced Level in Secondary Schools in Ntungamo District: A Case Study of Rubaare Sub-County.(Kabale University, 2014) Nyesiga, JoramThis study aimed to find out the causes of poor performance in geography at an advanced level in secondary schools in Rubaare sub-county Ntungamo District. The study objectives were:- To asses the school-related factors that cause poor performance in geography at the advanced level in secondary schools. To establish the environmental-related factors that cause poor performance in geography at the advanced level in secondary schools. To identify strategies to minimize poor performance at the advanced level in secondary schools. The study was conducted at three randomly selected schools in Rubaare sub-county Ntungamo District. A total sample of 69 respondents was selected to represent other schools in the sub-county. The targeted population was students, teachers, and head teachers. The researcher used questionnaires and interviews to collect accurate data. The data collected were analyzed using qualitative techniques and presented in tables, frequencies, and percentages. The study revealed that there was school related that, there were school-related, environmental factors that cause poor performance in geography at an advanced level in secondary schools and strategies to minimize poor performance at the advanced level. It was guided by the following objectives; to examine the factors responsible for school dropout, to assess the impact of school dropout among students, and to suggest remedies to solve the problem of school dropout in Kisoro municipality. The study was conducted through cross-sectional survey design alongside qualitative and qualitative paradigms. A cross-sectional research design was used to generate the information by explaining to the individual respondents the gist of the study. The population of the Study included SMC members, municipality education officials, head teachers, and their deputies, students, and teachers. Simple random sampling was used to get the sample size required and the exercise was conducted in such a way that there were different categories of respondents. Questionnaires and focus group discussions were used as research instruments. The research findings showed that the causes of school dropout in Kisoro municipality include school dues 41 (18% ), absenteeism 15(07% ), house chores 20(09% ), school distance 19(08% ), cultural factors 27(12%), home background 34(15%), parents education 26911 %) and gender discrimination 40(18%). The impact of school dropout among students in Kisoro municipality included social problems 47(21 %), an increased unit of cost of education 24(11 %), unemployment 31 (14%), high levels of crime 39(18%), low academic performance 69(31 %) and increased illiterate population 12(05%). The study findings showed that the remedies or possible measures to address the problem of dropout may include introducing alternative forms of education as reported by 46(21 % ), re-organizations of school systems 23(10% ), investing and improving in quality of schooling 55(25%), enactment of various national laws 32914%), strengthening the USE program 40(18%) and sex education 26(12%). The researcher concluded that in Kisoro municipality there are rampant cases of school dropouts as evidenced by the research findings from the field. The researcher also concluded that the major causes of school dropout in Kisoro municipality are due to negligence of the parents whereby some parents are not educated and therefore don't bother sending their children to school. The researcher recommends that; Governments should plan some special policies to improve female education like introducing special stipends for female students and also making education free for them. Although some countries have already taken some steps in this regard, it is important to expand it further for other countries. It is also necessary for governments to invest more money in making the environment favorable and sensitive for girls. Governments should also provide school supplies adequately according to the demands of the students.Item Embargo Comparative Study on The Nutrient Composition of The Exocarp And Other Parts of a Watermelon.(Kabale University, 2019) Luutu, Charles LastoMany people eat the stripped watermelon variety most especially during the very hot days to quench their thirst. However, they eat only the endocarp and discard away the exocarp and seeds. The study investigated the nutrient content in the exocarp and endocarp of a watermelon. Two samples of watermelon were obtained and juice extracts were obtained from both the exocarp and idoearp. The solution extracts were tested with iodine solution for starch, Benedict's solution for reducing sugars, and DCPIP for Vitamin C. Further, the concentration of Vitamin C and reducing sugars was determined quantitatively by redox titration. The study found out that the endocarp had high levels of carbohydrate concentration, and both the exocarp and endocarp had reducing sugars and Vitamin C, on qualitative analysis, the exocarp had higher concentrations of Vitamin C than the endocarp of a watermelon. Furthermore, the endocarp had a higher concentration of reducing sugars than the exocarp of a watermelon.Item Embargo Achers' Motivation and Students' Academic Performance in C.R.E. The study considered the following research objectives; to find out The use of ICT in the Teaching and Learning of History in secondary schools, to examine history Teachers' Perceptions or attitudes towards the use of Technology, to find out the challenges Teachers Face in Using Technology for Instruction, to suggest possible solutions to the challenges faced in ICT implementation. The study used a descriptive study approach. A sample size of forty-two (42) respondents was used. Questionnaires were distributed to different respondents (Teachers, Headteachers, and students), and interviews were conducted. Data was collected, analyzed, and presented in the form of tables and charts. From the analysis, the following conclusions were made; teachers and students have positive perceptions about the integration of ICT application in education delivery in History. Finally, many recommendations were made as follows; The Government of Uganda should consider providing more training on the pedagogical use of ICTs for the delivery of education, Teachers and students should invest their time in learning and training themselves about JCT application in education to acquire more capacity and reap more benefits of ICT for in education. It is also recommended that every teacher and student should consider acquiring a computer for private use in education to enhance access to such facilities.Item Embargo Assessment of The Quality of Borehole Water in Kanenankumba Village Hoima Municipality.(Kabale University, 2019) Tayeebwa, JoshuaThe purpose of the study was to assess the quality of borehole water in Kanenankumba village, Hoima municipality. The objectives employed were; to determine the physical and micro-biological water quality parameters, compare the obtained physical and micro-biological parameters with standard values outlined by WHO and also determine the local methods that can be employed to purify borehole water. The findings indicated that all the physical parameters met the standard requirements set for drinking water by WHO and the microorganisms (fecal coliforms) found present were enough to tell the level of contamination of the water. The study was guided by three objectives which include.' To analyze the contribution of religion to the development of the southern division, to find out whether religion has hindered or fostered the development of the southern division, and to identify other factors responsible for the development of the southern Division of Kabale municipality. The study was conducted using descriptive and analytical study design. A sample of 50 respondents was used to gather the required information and both stratified sampling and simple random methods were employed in selecting the sample. Questionnaires were administered to the respondents to gather the required data. The data was analyzed using Excel frequency distribution tables to establish the relationship between the variables. The study concludes that; the role of religion in development includes conflict prevention, peace building, governance, wealth creation, health, and education. Hindrances of development brought about by religion were personal interest, feelings, church wrangles, favoritism, change in modernization, and policy formulation. Other factors that affect development include; discrimination, population, culture, poor management, corruption, and political instability. It considered the following research objectives; to determine the effects of thematic curriculum on pupils' academe performance in upper primacy, to determine ways of improving thematic curriculum in teaching and learning in upper primary schools of Kamwezi Sub County, Rukiga District, and to find out other school related factors that affect pupil's academic performance in Kamwezi Sub County. The study adopted a descriptive-analytical cross-section survey as a research design, and a sample size of 84 respondents that included headteachers, teachers, and pupils who were both purposively and randomly selected respectively. Questionnaires and interview guides were used to obtain data from the respondents that were later analyzed and presented in the form of tables. The findings were discussed as follows; thematic curriculum improves pupils' self-direction and higher attendance. I can also take advantage of teachable moments/spontaneous events to engage them in their learning and promote learners. It provides pupils with a more meaningful learning experience to learners. It also builds on prior knowledge of pupils and motivates them when learning because engaging themes that relate to pupils' lives help them to get excited about learning. Finally, the thematic curriculum enables pupils to complete their homework and get better attitudes towards and helps to cover curriculum requirements of the subjects. It was concluded that a thematic curriculum offers opportunities for contextualized learning and makes a sense that is more relevant and practical for learning. Finally, the following recommendations were made; there is a need for the government to recruit more thematic teachers to handle large thematic classes. thematic teachers should use child-centered methods of teaching like demonstration, group discussion, and guided discovery where all pupils have a practical approach to learning and can arouse pupils' interest bead teachers should ensure that there is a regular supervisory system in their schools to improve teaching methods and social background of pupils.Item Embargo The Role of The Church in Stabability of Families: A Case Study of Kasese Catholic Parish Kasese Dioceses.(Kabale University, 2020) Biira, AnifaThe study investigated the role of the church on the stability of families in Kasese catholic parish Kasese dioceses.Item Embargo Conflict Resolution Strategies and Social Cohesion of Local Communities in Kyanamira Subcounty, Kabale District(Kabale University, 2020) Barigye, SamuelThe study aimed at establishing the relationship between conflict resolution strategies and social cohesion of local communities in Kabale district with reference to Kyanamira Sub County. The study was guided by objectives which were to explore the causes of conflicts in local communities in Kyanamira Sub County, Kabale district; to establish the effect of conflicts on social cohesion in local communities in Kyanamira Sub County, Kabale district; and to identify interventions by local communities and government agencies to address conflicts and improve social cohesion. The study used a cross-sectional research design. A sample size of 209 respondents was used. Purposive and simple random sampling techniques were used to select respondents. Data collection was done using questionnaires, interviews, and documentary review. Data presentation was done using frequency tables and percentages. In the light of factors influencing the occurrence of conflicts, it is concluded that delays in solving land conflicts, poor community participation in conflict resolutions, corruption, and scarcity of resources are among the major causes of land conflicts. These factors influence the occurrence of land conflicts; if they were tackled and dealt with as early as possible, this would significantly contribute to ending land-based conflicts. With regard to efforts made to mitigate land conflicts in the study area, it was found that the government and traditional institutions had been playing a major role in resolving land conflicts. Also, it was found that other actors, such as CSOs and religious institutions, were important in mitigating land conflicts among smallholder communities in the study area. It is clear that different stakeholders, such as governments, religious, and traditional institutions, play a key role in mitigating land-based conflicts in the study area. However, one may conclude that much more coordinated, reliable, sustainable, and prompt measures are needed to deal with land conflicts in the study area. Based on the findings, it was recommended that awareness creation on land-related matters and conflict resolution should be considered as a priority issue for the security of land use by smallholder communities. In order to maintain peace and harmony in society, the change of the mindset of different land user groups and farming should consider the value of each other in order to avoid land conflicts.Item Embargo Library Facilities, Effective Teaching and Learning of Christian Religious Education in Selected Secondary Schools in Ny Akishenyi Sub-County Rukungiri District, Uganda.(Kabale University, 2020) Niwatuha, JacklineThe study was about the library facilities, effective teaching and learning of Christian Religious Education (CRE) in secondary schools. The objectives of the study were; to identify the library facilities used for teaching and learning CRE in secondary schools in Nyakishenyi Sub County Rukungiri District, to study the challenges facing students in the learning of CRE in secondary schools in Nyakishenyi Sub County Rukungiri District, and to find out the solutions to challenges facing students in learning CRE in secondary schools in Nyakishenyi Sub County Rukungiri District. The study used a descriptive research design. The target population of the study was 116. This comprised of 2 Secondary Schools, 2 School Head teachers, 04 CRE teachers, 110 CRE students. The researcher sampled two secondary schools; one government aided Secondary school, and One Private Secondary School. The researcher purposely targeted the above schools because of their diversity. The researcher used both purposive and simple random sampling. The schools were selected using Purposive sampling to achieve the desired objectives and the students were selected using random sampling to ensure partiality. The study used primary data collection method using questionnaires; the questionnaires included both open and closed ended questions. The study gave the results of the findings, conclusions and recommendations. This study would be used by the ministry of education and other stake holders to underline the importance of CRE on students in secondary schools and make it relevant to influence the ethical formation of students. This would consequently make the students morally upright and less corrupt citizens in public and private sector in Kenya in future. The study found that CRE library facilities help much in teaching and learning of the subject. The study concluded that the availability of library facilities significantly and positively influences the student's learning and teaching of CRE in secondary schools in Nyakishenyi sub-county, Uganda. Keywords: Library Facilities, Effective Teaching, Learning, Christian Religious Education, Selected Secondary Schools, Rukungiri District, Uganda.Item Embargo Information Communication Technology and Performance of Commercial Banks in Uganda: A Case Study of Equity Bank in Kabale Municipality(Kabale University, 2020) Sabiiti, IgnatiusABSTRACT This study assessed the relationship between information and communication technology and performance in commercial banks in Uganda; a case study of Equity Bank Kabale branch was conducted. A cross-sectional study was used, and a sample of 108 respondents was used for the study. The study also found that: inadequate ICT infrastructure, technophobia among ICT bank officials due to insufficient information technology skills, the cost demands of ICT gadgets, a lack of digital preservation knowledge, and network problems were among the challenges faced by Equity Bank Kabale branch. The study also recommended that the ICT infrastructure of the bank in the form of cables, switches, and roughers should be improved to the desired standards in order to enable the clients to be provided with adequate and timely services. The bank officers, especially the older employees, should be trained on the use of technological gadgets in order to remove technological phobia among them so as to equip the entire bank staff with the required skills in order to perform their duties effectively. The bank officers should be trained on the process of ensuring digital preservation In order to equip them with knowledge of digital preservation, there should be better vertical communication to enable provision of effective feedback that leads to better organizational performance, and there should be strong coordination across functions of the bank to achieve the desired and intended goals for success.Item Embargo The Effect of Population Growth on Climate Change in Buhara Sub-County Kabale District Uganda.(Kabale University, 2020) Muchunguzi, ChristineThe study investigated the effect of population growth and climate change in Kabale District, Uganda. The study was guided by objectives namely: to find out how population growth cont:·ibute to climate change in Buhara Sub County, to identify the effects of climate change on development in Buhara Sub County, and to find out the strategies for mitigating climate change in Buhara Sub County. It was conducted through a descriptive research design; data was collected during May and August 2020 using questionnaires. interview techniques from a sample of 156 respondents out of a target population of 256. The study established that the high levels of poverty were the major influence of population growth effects on climate in the Kabale district. infrastructure development has influenced the climate in Kabale. Poor agricultural production was identified to be the greatest effect of climate change since it harms the n: national economy. too, with increases in food prices leading to an unstable macro economy. The study findings indicated that changing crop varieties as an adaptation measure initiated by Ltnncrs 01i ciirn~it..:: change in Kabale district. The study concludes that the impacts of climate change in this country are not a future threat they are already pervasive through the increased frequency and intensity of Tropical cyclones. increasing sea levels, decreasing crop yields, and water shortages obtained in a season. Actions on climate change are very imperative. as climate change poses threats to it achievement of SDGs. These actions must be integrated. balanced and inclusive. respective of social. economic, environmental, and political arena to sustain the achievements of SD2Gs beyond 2030. To sum up, Uganda should prioritize population growth and climate change as an ape development agenda in the coming decades to achieve sustainable development. The study recommends that effective leadership ensure that population and its importance in rc\::JbJn to climate- change is discussed at the most influential! levels, nationally, and Expansion of successful, locally-led action on climate change. Adaptation Programmes of Action, to ensure that climate change a&statien reflects local! knowledge, ski!!s ad expertise.
