Abstract

The study examined the role of debate in students' academic performance in the English language. A case study of selected secondary schools in Bukindasub-county, Rukiga District. The study followed research objectives which were to find out the factors influencing the use of debate towards students' academic performance in the English language of selected secondary schools in Bukinda sub-county Rukiga district; to assess the contributions of debate towards students' academic performance in the English language of selected secondary schools in Bukinda sub-county Rukiga district; and to find out the effects of debate on student academic performance in the English language of selected secondary schools in Bukinda sub-county Rukiga district. The methodology of the study was descriptive research design using both qualitative and quantitative tools. A sample size of 80 respondents was selected from respondents of St. Paul's Bukinda secondary, Bukinda secondary school, and Harambe high school in Bukinda sub-county. The findings of the study revealed that female respondents were highly represented in the study and they were marked with 71 %. Availability of reading materials, with 20%, was among the major factors which influence use of debate in schools. 22% revealed that deeper thinking and more arguments to students was the major contribution of debate towards students' academic performance. There were major effects of debate towards students' academic performance, such as imparting the spirit of reading culture among learners, which was represented by 25% of the respondents. Based on the results obtained in this study, it is recommended that the national curriculum center should strengthen and engage debate as a compulsory venture in the English language so as to improve the speaking skills of students in schools and Schools should sensitize on how to review some of the English vocabulary in and speaking skills procedures should be encouraged among students in Bukinda sub-county, Rukiga district, and there is a need for government intervention through the ministry of education to introduce refresher courses, training, and seminars on topical discussion about different topics in debate in the English language.
