Abstract

The study focused on the teaching and assessment of Physical Education (PE) in secondary schools within Kabale Municipality. The objectives of the study were to identify the challenges faced by secondary schools in teaching Physical Education, assess the readiness of schools to teach the subject and examine how schools conduct the assessment of Physical Education. A descriptive research design incorporating both qualitative and quantitative approaches was employed. The study involved 66 respondents selected through non-probability sampling methods, including purposive sampling, stratified sampling, and snowball sampling. Data collection tools included questionnaires, interviews, and focus group discussions. Key findings indicated that a lack of competent human and financial resources was a major challenge, with 41% of respondents strongly agreeing, 45% agreeing, 5% unsure, 6% disagreeing, and 3% strongly disagreeing. Teachers relied mainly on textbooks and syllabi for instructional materials, with the same response pattern of 41% strongly agreeing, 45% agreeing, 5% unsure, 6% disagreeing, and 3% strongly disagreeing. Despite these challenges, PE teachers demonstrated adequate knowledge and skills, with the majority holding diplomas or degrees, as indicated by 43% strongly agreeing, 48% agreeing, 3% unsure, and 8% disagreeing. The study concluded that while PE departments were equipped with essential tools and materials, there is a need for further research into PE student training and assessment methods to enhance the teaching and learning process.
