Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to design a property - based rainwater drainage system as a solution to mitigate the localized ponding at the Faculty of Engineering, Technology Applied Design and Fine Art. A property - based rainwater drainage system comprises of a number of components broadly categorized as roof, surface or underground drainage. The Faculty of Engineering, Technology Applied Design and Fine Art suffers from localized ponding due to heavy rains and this has resulted into water ingress into the buildings, inadequate space for parking and socializing amongst students since the compound and some walkways are inaccessible leading to stagnation thus resulting into a habitat for frogs, snails and insects such as mosquitoes. Roof drainage system in particular siphonic roof drainage system has been designed for the large roof areas. These discharge to the above ground water tanks of capacity 20 and 15 cubic metres. For the smaller roof areas, they have been designed to discharge to the surface water drainage channel designed to accommodate surface runoff and roof runoff from small roof areas. This study has demonstrated that the introduction of siphonic roof drainage system sized appropriately will effectively drain off all roof runoffs and the remaining surface nm off would sufficiently be drained off to the trapezoidal channels along the road and the mechanical workshop.
