Abstract

This project presents the design and simulation of an optimized microgrid system for Kabale University, addressing the challenges of unreliable grid power and promoting sustainable energy solutions. The microgrid integrates solar photovoltaic (PV) energy, a battery energy storage system (BESS), and the utility grid, with a focus on minimizing grid dependence and maximizing the utilization of renewable energy. MATLAB/Simulink was used for modeling and simulation, incorporating key components like PV arrays, boost converters, inverters, batteries, and control systems. The design process involved load assessment, component selection and sizing, control strategy implementation, and performance analysis. Findings demonstrate the microgrid's capability to operate independently from the Utility grid (islanded mode), effectively managing power balance, voltage stability, and energy storage. The project highlights the potential of microgrids to enhance energy security, reduce costs, and promote environmental sustainability in educational institutions and similar settings facing energy challenges.
