Abstract
The study focused on parental care and its role in promoting teenage pregnancy, using Kirima Sub-county in Kanungu District as a case study. The objectives included investigating how parental care influences teenage pregnancy in the area, examining other factors contributing to teenage pregnancy, and identifying solutions to the problems related to parental care and teenage pregnancy. The research used a cross-sectional survey design and involved 50 respondents, selected through both purposive and simple random sampling. Data was collected using questionnaires. The study concluded that socio-economic conditions in households affect the education of girls, particularly due to issues related to parenting styles and teenage pregnancy. These challenges include poverty, which affects the ability of parents to afford school-related costs like uniforms and other supplies, poor sanitation and hygiene at schools, and negative attitudes from teachers and school administrators towards girls' education. Other factors promoting teenage pregnancy can be addressed through parental involvement, environmental factors, government intervention, parents' education and economic backgrounds, education for girls, awareness programs on teenage pregnancy, and financial support. The study recommends that the Ministry of Education (MOE) should work to ensure girls have access to education on par with boys, by implementing existing policies such as providing sanitary pads/towels. It also suggests that parents be educated and sensitized about their financial responsibilities beyond tuition fees, such as paying for development and feeding program fees. Female teachers should serve as role models, encouraging girls to stay in school and emphasizing the importance of education for their future.
