Abstract

The study was about the impact of vernacular speaking on pupils' academic performance in upper primary classes of Buyanja Sub County, Rukungiri District. It was based on the following objectives; to establish the relationship between the uses of Vernacular Speaking on upper primary school pupils and academic performance in upper primary in Buyanja Sub County, Rukungiri District, to find out the challenges faced in teaching and learning using vernacular primary schools in Buyanja Sub County, Rukungiri District. to establish the solutions to the challenges faced in using Vernacular in teaching and learning in Upper classes. The study used a sample size of 78 respondents, which included teachers, head teachers, and pupils. The study used questionnaires and interviews to collect data. From the findings, the research found that; Teachers agreed that the local language contributes positively towards the acquisition of the English language and that the local Language boosts children's self-esteem and confidence. Combining vernacular and English produces the best performance in the English language among primary children. The majority of primary teachers and Headteachers have a negative attitude toward the use of the local language as a language of instruction. The study concluded that; Vernacular or local language should be used when teaching and learning is taking place in primary because it helps the children to acquire and understand various skills easily. It helps them to learn the English language easily since skills gained using the local language can be transferred to English since both languages, that is local language and English nurture each other. The main language of instruction in primary is local language together with a bit of English. This helps children learn English easily and combining local language and English produces the best performance in primary children performance. There are no teaching and learning resources in primary written in the local language and the majority of parents like English to be used as a school language of instruction.
