Abstract
This study explored the extent of the adoption and use of library catalogue by students of Bishop Barham University College in Kabale District. It adopted a descriptive survey research design using a questionnaire as an instrument of data collection. Copies of the questionnaire were distributed to 70 respondents (students, administrators and staff users) randomly out of which 66 copies were retrieved and used for the study. Data collected were analyzed using tables for clarity and ease of comprehension. The findings revealed that most of the respondents 40 (61%) were aware of the library catalogue to a very great extent, while 5 (8%) were not aware of the library catalogue at all, most respondents 32 (48%) preferred to physically browse through the library shelves; most respondents 48 (73%) found the use of OPAC very difficult. Meanwhile, 52 (79%) respondents found using the card catalogue very easy. The study also revealed that the respondents were facing constraints in using the library catalogues for information retrieval, these included; limited access to computers, unclear instructions on how to use the catalogue, time wastage when using the card catalogue and poor understanding of meaning of information on card catalogues amongst other catalogues. The study, therefore, recommended among others that the library should organize orientation and user education programmes as measures for creating awareness and encouraging the utilization of the library catalogue amongst students of Bishop Barham University College.
