Abstract

The study was carried out under the topic" The impact of ICT on students' academic performance in selected secondary schools in Kabale District. A case study of Katuna Town Council. The objectives of the study were; to assess whether there is a relationship between information communication technology and students' academic achievements, to investigate the factors affecting the implementation of ICT study programme in secondary schools in the Kabale district and to suggest remedies to factors affecting the implementation of ICT study programme in secondary schools. The study used a descriptive research design which gives a systematic description of the impact of CT on students' academic performance in secondary schools in the Kabale district by employing the use of a questionnaire to obtain adequate information. The study considered thirty (60) respondents from each school that is fifty-five (55) students, one (1) Headteacher and four (4) teachers who were purposively selected for the study. Instruments for data collection included a questionnaire and interview guide. The findings showed that there is a relationship between ICT and academic achievements as it directs instruction to learners, promotes individualized instruction, allows students control and provides a more positive and effective climate. The factors affecting the implementation of ICT study programmes in secondary schools, included; lack of qualification development, insufficient financing, lack of support from school I organisation or management, shortage of time and limited accessibility whereas the possible solutions to the challenges included political decisions, support from the school management committee, teachers should act as learners, time issue, peer support and increasing funding. The researcher concluded that; is ICT integration into the learning and teaching process and the whole system of education is a rather complicated process, new conceptions, strategies, plans and models have to be developed by the Ministry of Education and school administration which makes full use of the potential of new technologies. An attempt to integrate information and communication technologies will be a fruitful and efficient process only if it is preceded by proper planning provided by the Ministry of Education and Sports and the proper provision of resources for schools. The whole learning/teaching and change process of integrating ICT has to be flexible, and its efficiency depends on the motivation model developed by the school and the preparation of the whole academic staff to implement innovations. The researcher recommended that; the government should provide enough funds for schools to purchase computers for instructional purposes and make available suitable computer environments in our secondary schools. Conferences, workshops and symposiums should be organized to train people and enlighten them on the need for computer education.
